Rothenburg, Germany – March 2006 – A Day in a Medevial Town

Dating back to around 1100, Rothenburg on the Tauber is a well preserved medevial town in Bavaria. Since we were there in the winter, the usual tourist throngs were missing, so we had the town to ourselves.

One of the highlights is being able to traverse most of the old town on the wall, providing overviews throughout.

We enjoyed our day in Rothenburg, as well as the excellent hospitality of the hotel and restaurant owners.

Sinsheim, Germany – February 2006 –

The small German town of Sinsheim has one of my favorite museums I have ever visited. The Sinsheim Auto & Technik Museum is over 500,000 square feet of automobiles, trucks, tractors, military equipment, chain saw, hair dryers, and everything else imaginable.

By far the highlight though is the collection of airplanes literally mounted on the roof. After viewing Europe’s largest collection of American classic cars, and the vast collection of Formula 1 race cars, you head up to the roof where you are greeted with, among others, a Concorde and a TU144 (a ‘Konkordski’).

We spent the entire day wandering throughout this amazing place, burning through two camera batteries in the process!

Trier, Germany – February 2006 – Rosenmontag

Throughout Germany on the Monday before Lent they celebrate Rose Monday, Rosenmontag. We were fortunate enough in 2006 to be in Trier, Germany for the Rosenmontag Parade.

Hands down the best parade ever, for hours floats went by with people celebration/lampooning politicians, cultures and everything else. The highlight was the fact that not only do they throw candy to the children, they all had ‘adult beverages’ that when you held out your little plastic cup, it was filled!

Trier, Germany – February 2006 – Roman Empire Sites

Trier, Germany has been settled since the 4th century BC, and for an extended period was a Roman settlement. As a result there are some fine examples of Roman architecture that remain in the city. While we were there primarily for the Rosenmontag parade, you can’t miss some of the other highlights of the town, including the ruins.

Unfortunately the baths were closed so we were unable to explore in any detail. I look forward to the day I can return and view the ruins properly.
