Lancaster, Ohio – March 2015 – Museum Day

With the cool March day, and spring still not yet blooming, we decided to spend the day at a few local museums that I have been planning on going to.

The Jack Nicklaus Museum is on the West Campus of Ohio State, near Schottenstein Arena. While well done, it doesn’t appear to have been updated since it’s opening years ago. The time we were there nobody else came in.

The museum focuses on his youth in Upper Arlington, his accomplishments, with a nice collection of trophies, courses he designed, a small section on other golf legends, and a section for Ohio State golf. All in all it was ok for it’s $10 admission price, but not one of the better ones.

The Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster is located in a mid 1800s house, with period pieces on the first floor. The second floor has rotating exhibits, when we were there the display was A Tradition of Progress, Ohio Decorative Arts 1860-1945. The items displayed were made in Ohio during that period, a time when America was going through mechanization.

The display emphasizes items that the emerging middle class would have purchase, sometimes practical, often just for display. The highlight were items from the Arts and Crafts movement, including some wonderful chairs, and pottery from Rookwood, Roseville and Weller.

The Ohio Glass Museum is located in an old bank on Main Street, in the middle of some small shops, and vacant buildings.

They pay tribute to the primary industry of my hometown, glassmaking. Among the displays were a collection of items used in glassmaking, the ‘Treasures of Ohio’ collection of some fine art glass, and a large collection of Degenhart Glass in the lower level

The best display was filled with TV tubes, medical equipment, tail light fixtures, and other ‘every day’ uses like exit signs, turn signals and streetlight covers that when they were produced in the early 1900s, were down with mouth blown tools.

Augusta, GA – April 2013- The Masters

Thanks to a really good friend I was able to secure tickets to the Masters Golf Tournament Wednesday Practice Round. This was important because you are permitted to take photos on a practice round, and even better Wednesday is the day the pro’s do a par 3 tournament where their family and friends tag along as caddies.

I was instructed to get there early, so I did, before the break of dawn.

The sand traps on the pitching range had one of the ubiquitous groundskeeper in the coveralls grooming them.

The cottages were beautiful with their shrubberies in full bloom.

The players were much more relaxed with the fans.

On one hole the players would try and skip their ball across a pond.

Early April in Georgia provides the perfect weather for the grounds to be immaculate.

For the par 3 tournament the families were out, complete with the coveralls.

As the day was ending there was a sighting of ‘The King – Arnold Palmer’

In the end it was a great day at a very famous place, but for shooting photography of the greatest golfers in the world I had better luck at the World Golf Series events at Firestone Country Club in Akron.

Akron – August 2012 – Firestone Country Club World Golf Championship

Firestone Country Club is located in the south side of Akron, in anotherwise fairly nondescript neighborhood. Firestone however has hosted numerous major golf tournaments, and continues to host a World Golf Championship stop.

These events, separate from the PGA Tour, attract all of the top name golfers from around the world. As usual I went out on a practice round so I could photograph the event.

Akron – August 2011 – Firestone Country Club Golf Tournament

As noted in another post, Firestone Country Club in Akron hosts a World Golf Championship tournament each year. This event attracts the top golfers from around the world, even if they don’t normally play on the American tour.

As always I go on a practice round so I can take photographs, as they are prohibited during the tournament play on Thursday – Sunday.
